For the second year in a row, we checked out the annual Evanston, Wyoming Roundhouse Festival. The rail yard in historic downtown Evanston has a terrific old school railroad roundhouse and machine shop that has been about 50 percent restored. During the festival, Hostlers model railroading club puts on a great model railroading show with a whole bunch of track layouts and vendors.
I was exposed to model railroading first, by a friend back in high school, and then again when my son was very young, with his love for Thomas the Train. I love watching the little trains go on by, and also looking at all the rolling stock and engines for sale at these events (HO scale is by far the coolest size). Model railroading is pretty cool, even though I doubt I will ever put a set together. But I dig it none the less.
It’s neat to see people of all ages enjoying railroading. Sure, there’s quite a bit of older folks taking part. But there’s so many younger people involved, I think model railroading will continue on for quite some time!
Of course I can’t forget about the main part of the Roundhouse grounds, the roundtable and rail yard. During the festival they give roundtable rides, which is super cool! You can just imagine engines and other train cars being towed on to the roundtable and then being spun around to the appropriate track/door of the roundhouse, where they would get some much needed maintenance.
Can’t wait for next year’s roundhouse festival, thanks for reading!
