The Urban Arts Festival put on by the Utah Arts Alliance was this past weekend in downtown Salt Lake City at the Gallivan Center. Last year we checked it out for the first time, it was pretty cool, so we knew we were definitely going again this year if we could. There’s tons of live performances, graffiti installations and vendors. This year’s headliner, Grandmaster Flash!
I knew I wanted to hear a live mixed set from Grandmaster Flash, so I convinced Jenn to go with me on Saturday night to check it out. We blew off looking around at vendors and arrived just before 8pm. For the entry price of FREE, a few thousand people were treated to the legendary DJ Grandmaster Flash mixing his way through every type of music from the late 60’s to today. Every once in a while he would stop the music and pretty much teach everyone what hip hop really means and how it came about. If the people there didn’t know, they did now. “Without the 70’s, no hip hop”…
He mixed it up for almost 2 hours; disco, funk, pop, rock, hip hop, r&b, reggae, everything. Everyone there was all smiles. So glad we went.
There was quite a bit of art being created. Most of these pieces were only part way done by Saturday night.
Sunday afternoon we went back over to the festival to check out the vendors and do a bit of Pokemon GO hunting. Picked up a cool psychedelic style Park City sticker from an artist, Jenn found a much needed new purse and we found a cool little coffee shop for a drink. The graffiti pieces were still being worked on, and a few more new pieces had been started as well. We all love the smell of low pressure spray paint, smells like candy, mmm… There are so many talented people using spray paint to make really cool art. Keep it up!
