Two weekends ago we drove out about 20 miles east of Hyum, Utah to check out the Hardware Ranch Elk Farm. The moms, babies and bulls come in to feed for a while before migrating on out for the rest of the year. From Salt Lake City, it’s a nice hour-plus drive northeast (just south of Logan), and this time of the year it was really pretty out there. It was our first time there, we were happy to see so many elk, and get a sleigh ride right out in to the middle of the herd.
From what the guide told us, as long as they have a bit of food in their tummy, that will keep their internal furnace going all night to keep them warm.
The guide also told us that the bulls, when fully grown, like to lead solitary lives out on the range. They seldom come in to the herd to mingle.
Hardware Ranch is totally worth the drive, so much to see and learn about elk. Afterwards we checked out Logan, Utah for the first time. Nice little college town with a historic downtown area. For dinner we had some pretty tasty pizza and beer at Factory Pizza, then headed on home.
**footnote… We also had pizza for lunch at Lucky Slice in Ogden, before heading up to Hardware Ranch. Yeah, we love pizza, LOL.
